A colleague, mentor and friend (Dr. Charles Harkness) has received - in his words - "an invitation from the Peace Corps to serve, September 15, 2003 to December, 2005, as a university professor teaching English as a second language and business communications in the Krygyz Republic. No specific site was given, but it probably will be in the capital of Bishkek as the word is they would like me in a spot where some decent health care is available. I've spent just a little time scanning the material in the packet; my immediate reaction is the job is a hell of a lot bigger than I am." Charles is retired and a healthy senior citizen.

He has asked his network if they have feedback, so I am asking if any of you have any knowledge of this place or advice about this position I can pass along to him.

I will be in Seattle at the Academy meetings, and may not respond to you immediately.

    Thank you.

    Erik,

I suspect most of us have no idea about Krygystan. However, you are probably
in the right place to find out some info. Talk to Jim Suchan to find out who
from NSA can give an analysis of the country. He's been at NPS long enough
to know people all over the Navy. BTW, tell Jim Hello, and I'll see him in
    Albuquerque.

My presumption is that our colleague has received and looked at the
following information; so, the following is for the rest of us.
Typically, the problems for the traveler are at the transition points,
i.e., when entering/leaving the country. As for other information, may
have to do enough reading to understand what it is that won't or can't
    be told.

Some online sources of possibly helpful info about Kazakhstan. A State
Department Counselor Information Sheet is available at:
    http://travel.state.gov/kazakhstan.html

Apparently, the 'lost wallet' scam is popular, taking advantage of a
    popular 'something for nothing' belief.

A more recent State Department Background Note:

    And, much more info at:
