Thanks to Gary Lundquist for focusing on one aspect of 'informed' as in
informed intuition. I hasten to emphasize that informed intuition is not a
component of management decision making but a mode of management decision
making -- and contrasted to the analytic mode. This distinction may be
subtle but is quite important. c.f. Gary Klein's "Intuition at Work." I
appreciate Gary's exploration of the dimensions of a decision. However, in
most cases the manager is suffering from option shock, having too many
variables to comprehend. This is where John Warfield's "Understanding
Complexity: Theory and Behavior" becomes valuable. I think we need not be
in an either-or situation, here, but should be looking for the best
combination of techniques for various situations.
