We are putting together a proposal for a
professional development workshop (PDW) for joint
submission to the MED and Careers Division for the
2004 Academy meetings. Its working title is "How to
Excel at both Teaching and Research: Tips from the
Trenches." The target audience for this PDW is new
    faculty and senior-level doctoral students.

In our Ph.D. programs, we are taught to pursue
research excellence above all else. However, most of
us (INSERT STAT HERE) go to faculties with
3-course/term teaching loads, where teaching and
research are equally important factors in personnel
decisions (a so-called "balanced school"). To focus
on one aspect of the job at the expense of the other
can be damaging to our careers. However, the ability
to excel at both of these time-consuming functions is
a rare skill. In addition, we also need
rest time away from our careers to 'recharge' and
    avoid burnout (Burke, 2000).

This PDW panel will be composed of four or five
faculty from balanced-schools who are all
    award-winning teachers and highly productive
researchers. We are all among the best at our
universities in both teaching and research. The
purpose of the PDW is for each of us to provide
hints/tip/insights as to how we are able to excel at
both tasks, while still maintaining a life away from
    our jobs.

If you are interested in being one of the members of
the panel, we will need a list of any teaching awards
you have been nominated for/won and a list of your
refereed pubs. We will need this by October 1, as the
submission deadline for a PDW is early-November. If
accepted, the PDW will be held Saturday or Sunday as
part of the pre-conference activities so you will also
have to be in New Orleans by then . If you have any
questions please let me know. Thanks.
