    BEREA COLLEGE

    Leadership Chair

Berea College is seeking to fill the William R. Gruver Chair in Leadership Studies. This tenure track position will support both the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good program in the Appalachian Center and a liberal arts academic department. This position is one of two endowed chairs providing leadership in developing an innovative, extended summer program entitled "Entrepreneurship for the Public Good" that integrates entrepreneurial and leadership theory and puts these concepts into practice in the Appalachian region. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable of leadership literature and theories stemming from one or more of the traditional liberal arts disciplines (e.g., psychology, political science, sociology, etc.) as well as have practical experience in applying such theories in community, non-profit, or business settings. The candidate should also feel comfortable working within the unique challenges and character of Southern Appalachia. The successful candidate will be appointed to an academic department appropriate to his or her field of study and will teach approximately half time in that field or in general studies. This appointment is expected to be made at the assistant or associate professor level beginning the summer of 2004 (tenure will not be granted upon appointment). Salary will be commensurate with experience. Terminal degree required and demonstrated commitment to excellent teaching and scholarship in a liberal arts environment is essential.

Berea College is a four-year institution committed to top quality undergraduate liberal arts education. The town of Berea, forty miles south of Lexington and two hours from Cincinnati, is located on the edge of rolling bluegrass country and the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The College's mission to educate and inspire leaders for Appalachia and beyond also includes special commitments to interracial education and the development of perspectives and values informed by an inclusive Christian faith. Admitting students of limited financial resources, the College charges no tuition. The labor program, in which all students participate, has long been another distinctive feature of a Berea education. Though many students are the first in their families to attend college, Berea ranks among the leading colleges in the South in the percentage of graduates who later earn doctorate degrees.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, a complete curriculum vita, transcripts and three letters of recommendation by January 2, 2004 to: Dave Porter, Academic Vice President and Provost, CPO 2204, Berea College, Berea, KY 40404.

Berea College, in light of its mission in the tradition of impartial love and social equality, welcomes all peoples of the earth to learn and work here. Employment decisions are based on training, education and experience related to the requirements of the job. All applicants for employment are considered without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability.
