Ideas for green management simulations

  • 1.  Ideas for green management simulations

    Greetings,

I hope this finds you well. Please excuse the cross
listings. This is a problem that all of us would like to
have. The state of Virginia found a bit more money for JMU
than was originally allocated (don’t tell UVa :-)). I can
use funds to purchase class room simulations. I plan to
teach a green management course. The learning objectives
    include:
 Students will be able to conduct strategic
environmental analyses in a variety of industries and
    competitive situations.
 Students will obtain hands-on experience in
    environmental strategies.
 Students will learn specific quantitative research
skills for research in business and the environment
 Students will develop their oral and written
communication skills concerning business and the environment.
 Students will develop their decision-making skills
    concerning business and the environment.

Class size will range from 10 to 30. I already use
Fishbanks – I really like it – and some modified simulations
from EduSim. Many potentially relevant simulations are
already listed on the ONE website – most of them are from
    World Resources:
    -Beckenstein, A.R., Long, F.J., Arnold, M.B., & Gladwin, T.N.
(1996). Stakeholder negotiations: Exercises in sustainable
    development. Chicago: Irwin.
-Cooksey, Ray W. Logjam Timber Company Problem Role play and
computer simulation experience to teach about policy decision
making and conflict resolution. [Source: Ray W. Cooksey,
Department of Marketing and Management, University of New
    England, Armidale, NSW 2351, Australia]
-Egri, C.P. (Forthcoming). The Environmental Round Table role-
play exercise: The dynamics of multistakeholder decision
making processes. Journal of Management Education. Based on
the Canadian Round Tables on the Environment and the Economy,
this role play requires the 10 participants (representing
environmentalist groups, industry and government) to develop
a mission statement at their initial meeting.
-Summers, Craig. (1994). Individual Choice and Social
Effects: A multimedia simulation. Release 2.0. An interactive
multimedia program which shows the collective long term
effects of decisions by up to 30,500 actors. Can be used for
social science laboratory experiments or educational
demonstrations. Example Subject: Atlantic Cod Fisheries.

-MEB Simulations [more information available on the MEB
    Website: http://www.wri.org/wri/ ]
-Chlorine and the Paper Industry [policy debate in pulp and
paper industry prompted by EPA’s new cross-media emissions
restriction rule in 1994; role play between industry, EPA,
    and Greenpeace]
-European Union Carbon Tax [negotiation among three
coalitions of European Union member nations to decide whether
to implement the carbon tax proposal and how to distribute
    the tax revenues]
-Hydropower and Salmon in the Columbia River Basin
[stakeholder negotiation to define a mutually satisfactory
set of principles for solving the ecosystem balancing
problems of the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia River Basin]
-Rainforest Negotiation Exercise [negotiation on oil
production in the environmentally sensitive Oriente region of
the Ecuadorean Amazon; environmental issues of rainforest
preservation and energy production; impact of development on
    Ecuador’s indigenous peoples]
-Shark Harvesting and Resource Conservation (S.H.A.R.C.)
[simulation of multi-party conference to discuss problem of
over-fishing and find a mutually agreeable solution while
    protection own economic interests]
I have already sent away for exam copies for those listed
above, but I’d appreciate any recommendations or problems
that you may have had. Two have no contact information
    including:
    • A Toxic International Partnership (TIP) [simulation
based on experience of chemical firms operating in Italy
during the late 1980s; emergency meeting of corporate
executives to develop a response plan to crisis involving
transport and disposal of toxic wastes]
    • EleSys-Teledec Negotiation. [two companies negotiate
purchase and sale of a manufacturing plant

Does anyone have the contact information? Could anyone
propose other alternatives? I’d be glad to summarize the
results for anyone who is interested. Thank you.

    Best regards,

    Bruce
