Call for participation in a multi-faceted debate on controversial issues in
leadership, and leadership education and development

We are organizing a unique multi-faceted debate to be published as a special
issue in Emerald's prestigious peer-reviewed international journal Management
    Decision

Its purpose is to air some of the controversial issues pertaining to
leadership. The hope is that some will be resolved for the benefit of managers who
would like to enhance their knowledge about what could make them more effective
leaders, and for educators who face the daunting task to make theories more
    practically useful to learners.

We are requesting views, controversial or otherwise, on leadership issues
    including:
    - the meaning and significance of quality in organizational leadership
    - differences between leadership and management
    - differences between teaching about leadership and teaching for leadership,
in  graduate schools and executive education
    - desirable direction of research on decision issues and processes that
    pertain to high
    quality leadership in organizations
    - leadership and decision issues

    Participation starts with:

    Step 1
An emailed expression of interest to participate by submitting a relevant
statement and/or responding to statement(s) from other participants, to
    erausch@kean.edu.
    Deadline: 1st October 2004

Following the expression of interest, the debate continues with:

    Step 2
An email with an initial provocative or otherwise relevant statement either:
    (1) by itself to erausch@kean.edu with or without an offer to submit a
relevant paper or (2) in a posting to the leadership debate forum at
www.managementfirst.com/forums/index.php (select Management Decision - Leadership Debate from
    the index).
    Deadline: 15th October 2004

All statements will be shared with all other potential participants (those
who have expressed interest and those who will express interest later)

    Step 3
Responses to statements either: (1) in an email to erausch@kean.edu or (2) a
posting to the leadership debate forum at
    www.managementfirst.com/forums/index.php
    Deadline: 30th November 2004

All responses will be shared with all other potential participants (those who
have expressed interest and those who will express interest later)

    Step 4
Relevant short papers (between 2000 and 4000 words) submitted to support a
provocative statement or to expand on a response, as an email attachment to
    erausch@kean.edu.
    Deadline: 30th November 2004

Throughout the debate, the email addresses of participants will not be shared
with others so that knowledge of participants will not bias comments and
responses. An identification code will be assigned to each participant and will be
used during the debate for each message from her or him (as well as for any
    paper).

All papers, provocative statements, comments, and rebuttals will be
double-blind peer-reviewed for acceptance or rejection in the special issue of the
journal. Originators will be informed of rejections with explanations; they will
have the opportunity to revise and/or object. Comments and rebuttals will, of
course, be published with the papers.

Interest in serving as a reviewer will be most welcome. Please contact
    erausch@kean.edu
