for a good online site with commercials from around the world, go to
www.adeater.com then click on "the film library". most of the commercials are from the 90s, but I don't think undermines the essential messages. Besides, if anyone knows of anything more current, please let us know!!
Some of my favorites:
1. for a plain simple "good life in our country" commerical, "couscous diari" from Tunisia.
2. ditto the pepsi commerical from Venezeula and the budweiser from Puerto Rico.
3. for "I can't believe they would actually show this on television no matter where", the "Gapa condom" commercial from Brazil. (need I say more?).
4. also, the "Nescafe" commericals from japan are a good ex. of the "soft sell" (appeals to the viewers emotions rather than the specific benefits of the products) that tends to be relatively more common in Japan.
5. as a counterpoint, the 2000 Nike "international" commerical is a great one. One commerical for many markets/cultures.
it's a great site to explore.. have fun.

films
There are a number of British Asian films which might be useful looking at cross cultural difference (and generational differences). If Bend it like Beckahm is too superficial or lighthearted, how about East is East?
Reviewing TV advertisements and their use in different countries might also be helpful, perhaps providing a good way to see how culture affects image adversely when the marketing department gets it wrong!
Best wishes
