Hi Nate,
John Van Maanen's work on socialization processes should be very relevant to
your research. Also, Fred Luthans' work on social learning theory. Fred
has the added advantage of having taught at West Point as a military
officer, and he may be able to give you additional insights. John is at MIT
and he can be reached at
jvm@mit.edu; Fred is at U. Nebraska-Lincoln and he
can be reached at
fluthans@unlnotes.unl.edu. Hope this helps.
Best,
Larry Pate

Subject: Research on Leadership Transition and initial period of a leader
moving into a leadership position
From: Allen, N. MAJ DEAN [mailto:
Nate.Allen@usma.edu]
My name is Nate Allen -- I'm currently attending George Washington
University's Business School as a doctoral student.
I am an Army officer and am preparing to go back to West Point as a
professor.
I am interested in focusing my dissertation work on a young officer's first
90 days as a platoon leader in the Army. I'd like to base some of my
research off of Michael Watkins' book The First 90 Days (HBS 2003). Do you
know of other research that is out there around leadership transition and
the initial period of a leader moving into a leadership position?
Thank you in advance for your advice and time!
v/r,
Nate Allen
