    Dear Acorners,

    Those who wish to add photography to their repertoire of
    research and representation skills -- or to their artistic practice
    -- will find this workshop with Jeff Berner a valuable opportunity.

    Jeff Berner is one of the pioneers of Fluxus and intermedia.

    In the early 1960s, his "Astronauts of Inner Space" courses
    at the University of California's San Francisco campus helped
    to launch the cultural ferment of the era -- along with his work
    as publisher of Lenore Kandel's Love Book and as a radical
    artistic columnist for the otherwise square San Francisco
    Chronicle. It was a different era, friends, and Jeff Berner
    was one of the people who helped to make it happen.

    Berner also made revolutionary contributions to education
    as co-founder of the San Francisco State College Experimental
    College. The first such institution located within the body of
    a major accredited university, the EC became a model for
    several hundred such projects on college and university
    campuses across the United States and Canada, where they
    served as incubators for new courses, new teaching methods,
    and new approaches to learning. (As the EC's dean for the
    arts and humanities, Jeff gave me my start in college
    teaching.)

    Now an award-winning photographer, Jeff Berner shares his
    approach in this workshop.

    Highly recommended!

    SEPTEMBER 10 -17 Creative Loitering in the Lot: Awakening Vision
    photography workshop (in English). Instructor: Jeff Berner, renowned
    and award-winning photographer (including two portrait prizes from
    Life magazine) lives in Paris and Northern California where he has
    also exhibited. He is author of a dozen books, including The
    Photographic Experience (Doubleday/Anchor), and his work has been
    published in French, Chinese, and Swedish as well as English. He is
    an experienced workshop leader in several countries., including the
    US (Esalen Institute, Big Sur, CA; Hawaii); Italy (Tuscany), and
    France (Paris). About this workshop, Jeff says: "We'll go on
    non-strenuous photo safaris, and there will be creative group-- or
    private -- critiques . The concluding evening will feature a
    multi-media show of our best images, with music. .What we learn can
    be applied not only to your future print, slide film or digital
    photography but also to painting and drawing." Easy-going projects
    include the following:

    * Looking at Seeing
    * The Psychology of Lenses
    * The Selective Eye (Composition)
    * Depth-of-Field
    * The Click that "Kills"
    * Creative Accidents
    * Visual Meditation
    * Expressing Color.

    Jeff's teaching spirit (in a nutshell) is reflected by the author of
    The Ascent of Man, Jacob Bronowski: "It is important that students
    bring a certain ragamuffin barefoot irreverence to their studies;
    they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it."
    Note: Participants use their own digital cameras. Each evening, the
    day's work is projected. There will be a few "loaner" cameras
    available.
