22. Practitioner Series/Action Research Community - Working on our Action Research Craft [PS, PNP, ODC, HR, MED]
12:00-5:00pm, Sheraton Waikiki Beach Hotel, Hilo Room, 2nd Floor
This workshop is designed for practioners and academics to come together for “hands on” learning about action research. The workshop will focus on knowledge and skills development for individuals who are interested in becoming more proficient in action research methodology. The session is designed for all levels of proficiency, and both “first timers” and “seasoned veterans” will come away with a greater understanding of action research issues.
The session will focus on the following themes:
Action research methodology for novice researchers
Action research methodology for advanced researchers
Teaching action research
Organizing and managing doctoral programs with a strong action research component
Writing action research for practitioner and academic publication

22. Practitioner Series/Action Research Community [PS, PNP, ODC, HR, MED]
8:00-6:00pm, Sheraton Waikiki Beach Hotel, Hilo Room, 2nd Floor
This workshop is designed for practitioner-based action research/learning projects to make progress on their own action research, with input from academic and practice-based experts. The workshop will focus primarily on problem-identification, problem solving, and action/research planning, as is relevant within each project. Projects will engage in intensive discussions around the selection and use of research methods in their action research and on the action learning processes. Participating projects reflect a range of academic-practitioner collaborations from industry, government, and non-profit organizations. The system level of projects will vary from single unit to regional or national network. Workshop participants will be invited to work with other projects, to provide input, reflection and complementary learning opportunities.
Project experiences will provide a springboard for intensive collaborative action research throughout the workshop. Facilitators will model effective team learning strategies, using various reflective learning exercises to intensify group work and draw out cross-project lessons on action research/action learning. The workshop will culminate in cross-project feedback on the intensive learning experiences and the utility of the reflective strategies. Workshop participants will extrapolate lessons learned for their own projects.
Project participants should come ready to work on their projects, either in making progress or setting the stage for the next round of AR. People participating in this workshop series are strongly recommended to bring descriptive project materials and summary information on accomplishments, issues, and lessons for cross-project learning.
We invited joint academic-practitioner project proposals of two types for participation in our Practitioner Series, and participants of the workshop will consult on the following types of projects:
1)“Embryo” Project Proposals – A new collaborative project between academics and practitioners for which attendees would like to add action-research expertise and advance during the Series.
2)In-Process Project Proposals – Either an ongoing collaborative activity that attendees would like to evolve into an action research project or an ongoing AR project that they would like to strengthen/expand, through critique and development during the session

Sunday, August 7
Practitioner Series/Action Research Community [PS, PNP, ODC, HR, MED]
8:00-12:00pm, Sheraton Waikiki Beach Hotel, Hilo Room, 2nd Floor
Sunday morning of the Practitioner Series will consist of facilitated integrated project discussions on doing action research, across sectors. Special attention will be given to how the projects take up social action and drive social change. This integrated discussion will enable projects to learn from each other and co-construct knowledge about doing action research. In addition, the workshop serves as a time for us to reflect on our “actionable” learning experiences.
We also will devote some time toward developing a “Plan of Action” for going forward with the PS-AR under AOM’s revised pre-conference policies.
