Colleagues,
My research is in the area of learning and training, so these posts are of
more than just passing interest. I appreciate all the comments so
far. Personally, I have found 3 books useful when I teach about teaching,
which I tend to do in short workshops and not in full classes.
Ken Bain's "What the best college professors do," which is based on
interviews with outstanding faculty across disciplines (2004, Harvard
University Press).
Stephen Yelon's "Powerful Principles of Instruction," which is also based
on interviews but primarily ones conducted with students (1996, Longman,
may be out of print).
McKeachie's Teaching Tips (already mentioned in another post).
Finally, since this is a PhD seminar, I would suggest covering basic
research on teaching and learning. The American Education Research
Association publishes a Handbook of Research on Teaching that is worth
examining for chapters, the Academy of Management Learning and Education
journal is starting to publish some interesting empirical pieces. Both are
worth a look.
I'd love to see your syllabus when you are done. In the meantime, best
wishes and happy teaching.
Ken
