Doctoral Institute for PhD candidates entering teaching careers

Dale, thank you for this posting. The Organizational Behavior Teaching Society has, for the past three years, sponsored and delivered a very successful Doctoral Institute for a number of PhD students nearing the completion of their degree work. The focus is to provide these promising scholars with development as teachers, and ways to explore a variety of pathways to individual scholarly goals.

The next Doctoral Institute will be held at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York June 13-14, 2006 in the days immediately preceding the 33rd annual Organizatonal Behavior Teaching Conference.

I'm an OBTS Board member, working with Randy Sleeth of VCU and Kent Fairfield of FDU to finalize plans for next year's Institute. Previous distinguished Doctoral Institute faculty have been Jean Bartunek, Kim Cameron, Tom Cummings, Andre' Delbecq, Jane Dutton, Cathy Enz, Mary Jo Hatch, Victor Vroom and David Whetten.

Enrollment in the Institute is limited and competitive, with applications accepted through the end of January. I'll post the flyer with all details to this list serve before the end of October, and I encourage list serve participants to identify doctoral students who would benefit from this remarkable experience.

Carol

>I have always been amazed by/concerned about the lack of attention given to newly minted PhDs‘ teaching skills. We earn our hoods as researchers but it seems rare that we are offered any guidance about the activity through which most of us will probably have the most impact -- teaching. Teachers need to be state certified to teach K through 12, but virtually anyone can teach at the college level. That‘s always seemed wrong to me.

>Carolyn, I suggest you get I touch with Bob Marx at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst to see what‘s going on there. When I was a doctoral student ten years ago, he started offering a seminar on teaching. I think it‘s developed to something more formal since then.

>> Thanks for the link to the University of
>> Michigan‘s Learning and Teaching website and other
>> links which have been introduced. I wonder whether
>> anyone has a recommendation for a model, pattern,
>> sample, or template for a website which can be used
>> by a university teacher as a supportive source for
>> their curriculum and class.

>> From the vantage point of a doctoral student, still
>> on the steeper part of the learning curve, I
>> recommend two texts:
>>
>>
>>
>> McKeachie, Wilbert J. (2002) McKeachie‘s Teaching,
>> Houghton Mifflin
>>
>> · He does a terrific job walking through
>> the mechanics of teaching and preparation
>>
>>
>>
>> Boice, Robert (2000) Advice for New Faculty Members.
>> Allyn and Bacon
>>
>> · Boice advocates moderation in working and
>> provides practical advice about how to get teaching
>> and writing done.
>>
>>
>>
>> Several University‘s offer websites that offer
>> brief and useful info regarding teaching. One that
>> I‘ve found useful is the University of
>> Michigan‘s Center for Teaching and Learning
>> http://www.crlt.umich.edu/
>>
>>
>>
>> I would be interested to see what your syllabus
>> includes.

>> Greetings fellow colleagues,
>>
>>
>>
>> This spring, I will be teaching a Ph.D. course
>> entitled: Instructional Development for Teaching
>> Business. This seminar will focus on Pedagogical
>> issues and techniques to include course and
>> curriculum development, outcomes assessment, class
>> management, and teaching techniques.
>>
>>
>>
>> This is a first for me. Has anyone else taught such
>> a course? Can you point me towards appropriate
>> texts or other readings? Are you willing to share
>> you syllabus?
>>
>>
>>
>> I thank you all for any clues you can provide.
