Mark Taylor Useful Devils - Usefulness is the Devil - The author traces the roots of the prevalent assumption that money is dirty and that capitalism not communism is the evil empire to Immanuel Kant who published a paper called the Conflict of the Faculties, in 1798, as a precursor to the founding of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Berlin</st1:placename></st1:place>, the first modern university. The higher faculties are charged with providing practical education, whereas the responsibility of the lower faculty is disinterested inquiry and critical reflection. The economic logic of the "lower faculty" leads to the conclusion that the evil that most threatens the academic enterprise is usefulness - especially as manifested in popularity and usefulness.
