  • 1.  MG-ED-DV: Status of The Journal of Management Development

    Posted 03-16-2006 02:38
A couple of years ago it was mentioned in the Management Education & Development Divison listserver that "The Journal of Management Development" was affiliated in some way with the Division.

My university has suddenly become obsessed with the myriad journal "ranking" systems, which, as most of us know are remarkably inconsistent across journals.

If you have a supported opinion as to the quality, high, medium, low, of the "The Journal of Management Development", I would find that information useful.

Take a look at the following site (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Strathclyde</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place>) where you will find a fairly comprehensive ranking list for Business and Management journals.   Whether you place any faith in this is another issue but you may find it useful nevertheless.  Here in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">UK</st1:place></st1:country-region> the higher education funding council has recently modified the way it ranks research quality.  Very approximately this equates to the following:

    0 unclassified

    1* of national standing

    2* of lower international standing

    3* of upper international standing

    4* world class

Several University Business Schools (e.g. Aston, <st1:city w:st="on">Warwick</st1:city>, Imperial, Cranfield, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">London</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place>) have tried to link these quality criteria to journals and you find their assessments of the various journals on this website.  The site also shows ISI impact factors although this is out of date and shows data for 2003 and not for 2004.  If a journal is registered with ISI then that is another way of examining rankings using the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) which allows you to sort journals according the their impact factors for the Business list, Management list etc.  JCR can be accessed via the Web of Science.

    Strathclyde site:

    http://www.strath.ac.uk/business/pdf/journalph.pdf

You will see from this site that JMD is not registered with the ISI and therefore does not have an impact factor.

However, according to Cranfield and Aston management schools it is ranked 1*, and according to BBS, it is 2*.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks Steve; the best agglomeration of these lists is at http://www.harzing.com/

I read a study a month or so ago on how academics rated journals for such lists, and the study found that they gave ratings for journals they had never read articles from, and rated most journals based upon ratings from rating lists. Hence, these lists seem unreliable.
