    In thinking back to my doctoral dissertation defense, after which my committee took me out for a hurried champagne toast around the corner, I never felt that something was awry.  That was until I found about Finnish doctoral defenses and feasts:

    Dear Charlie and other US colleagues,
     
    It's true that doctoral "karonkkas" are serious fun here in Finland. Note, however, that the doctoral candidate arranges the party - and pays the bill.
