  • 1.  Effectiveness of self-assessment instruments

    Posted 01-05-2007 00:01
    Hi there,

I'm looking for research that talks about the effectiveness of self
assessment instruments in the classroom. Like many of you, I use
instruments such as a conflict handling style inventory, a Big Five
personality instrument, a cognitive style assessment, or the FIRO-B
scale in my courses. I debrief them in different ways, typically in a
combination of lecture, reflection paper, and partner or group exercise.
Are you aware of any research that talks about the effectiveness of such
    self assessments and their debriefings?

    I'd greatly appreciate your input.

    Regards,
    Markus Vodosek

    Markus:

I use similar instruments in all my classes based on my experience with leadership development activities and programs.  The thought is that leadership begins with self-awareness and that knowing why people respond to you the way they do is a critical first step.  These experiences have given me much positive feedback from the students, particularly those in groups, about better understanding themselves and others.  Note that all my students are graduate level students in a business school, many working full-time.

For research, I suggest contacting the Center for Creative Leadership and other organizations that have worked on these and similar other programs.
