    Hello, everyone.

Sorry to trouble you with a rather mundane question.

Our School is moving into a new building.  There is a room which holds about 50 students, and instructors will be able to re-arrange the tables and chairs to accommodate special teaching sessions, do exercises etc.  We are trying to find an appropriate name/label for it.  Do your universities have special labels/names for such rooms?  We have previously used  "break-out room", "syndicate room", and someone has suggested "Teaching Room - Flex Seating".  Not the best, I think.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If you want to have fun with this, hold a "name that room" contest.  Invite students, faculty, whoever, to submit names by a given date, then a few representatives from each group gets together and chooses the winner.  The person who submits the winning name gets something, like the first slice of pizza when you christen the room.

Or you could just give it a boring name like most schools.

    Hi, Natalie:

How about the 1837 room?  That might challenge your students to delve into the chaos of the Rebellion of 1837, with its many radical ideas for alternative forms of organization...

Or maybe someone would sponsor the de Bono Room?  Use six-colored furniture to suggest the alternatives of the Six Thinking Hats...

Or perhaps the House of Commons Room, with multiple parties and frequent re-arrangement of the positions of the participants...

Ouch, my cheek is hurting...  LOL!

A little more seriously, How about the Innovation Room?

    Tom.

    Hi Natalie
    How about 'Learning Space"?
all our facilities  are as you describe - we have no tiered or fixed furniture spaces any more - yet  still call them classrooms! So "Learning Space" may start a trend!
    Regards
    EL

On a slightly flippant note, I attended a residential course at Schumacher College in Devon recently, and their bar is called 'Edge of Chaos' !!!

In theatre, such a flexible space is frequently referred to as a "black box."   The obvious pun is intended here!
