The address to be presented by Dean Joel Podolny: "Transforming Business Education" is of direct relevance to all business schools that are increasing their attention on management competencies of their graduates in a complex cross-functional and global operating environment.

Joel Podolny is the William S. Beinecke Professor of Management and Dean of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Yale</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place> of Management.  He has an illustrious academic and administrative career since graduating from <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on"><u1:place u2:st="on"><u1:placename u2:st="on">Harvard</u1:placename></u1:place></st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on"><u1:placetype u2:st="on">University</u1:placetype></st1:placetype></st1:place> in 1991.   Professor Podolny has written and taught in the strategy, behavioral and business environment areas and published in many top journals such as the Administrative Science Quarterly, American Journal of Sociology, Strategic Management Journal, and others.  In his current role as Dean of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Yale</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place> of Management, Professor Podolny has  taken the school on an exciting journey to develop and implement a new curriculum that breaks down traditional functional barriers.  Rather than teaching management concepts in separate, single-subject courses like Finance or Marketing, Yale's approach teaches management in an integrated way - the way in which most managers must function every day to achieve success.

The heart of the new first-year curriculum is a series of eight multidisciplinary courses, called Organizational Perspectives, that are structured around the organizational roles a manager must engage, motivate, and lead in order to solve problems - or make progress. These roles are both internal to the organization - the Innovator, the Operations Engine, the Employee, and Sourcing and Managing Funds (or CFO) - and external to the organization - the Investor, the Customer, the Competitor, and State and Society.

This focus on organizational role, instead of disciplinary topic, creates a richer, more relevant context for students to learn the concepts they need to succeed as managers.   The new program has produced tremendous excitement and enthusiasm among Yale business students, alumni and companies that recruit from Yale.  It has also dramatically increased the already high number of student applications to the school.

We look forward to seeing you at the MED Keynote address by Dean Podolny and participating in this exciting session.

    Best wishes,
