  • 1.  Business Ethics Survey

    Hello all,

Apologies for sending out this survey again; however, we have adapted it
into a more user friendly form, and would like to give those who have not
participated as of yet a chance to do so.

Here's a fascinating survey developed in part by Kenneth Goodpaster and
Dean Maines at the University of St. Thomas.

I'm using it to compile data for an article "Is Corporate America Mostly
Ethical? Testing the Bad Apple Theory," to appear in a volume I'm editing
entitled Doing Well AND Good: The Human Face of the New Capitalism (Ethics
in Practice Series, Information Age Publishing). FYI: I'm still accepting
    abstracts if anyone is interested.

But what I need asap is for as many of you as possible who have worked in
the private sector within roughly the last decade to take about 15 minutes
to fill out this survey, with respect to the company you worked at the
longest and/or most recently. Disclosure of the company name is voluntary
and will be kept confidential. Company names will not be mentioned in the
    article.

The survey can be found at the following link:

    http://leeds-survey.colorado.edu/Surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?surveyid=1795

Please feel free to send any questions to businessethicssurvey@gmail.com.
Thank you for taking the time, and apologies again for multiple postings.

    Sincerely, and thank you,

    Julian Friedland

Sorry - but at our institution, any survey or research conducted with
human participants requires ethics approval from our university's ethics
committee. I assume you also have ethics approval? Could you please
    necessary details of this approval.

    Hello Jan-
Given the limited nature of this survey and that it is directed to and about educational institutions (versus human subject), it does not require an Institutional Review Board (IRB)- the American version of your Ethics Board. This limited study does not rise to the level of an "experiment".
Thank you in advance for your reconsideration.

    Dear Ray,

Of course your survey requires IRB review. It is no doubt exempt, but it
still requires the IRB to so state. But it is the IRB that determines
    such status.

Research that exposes participants to minimal risk, or no risk at all, may
be considered exempt from the need for ongoing IRB review and approval.
Federal law details six categories of exempt research. The one that
    applies is:

    EXEMPTION UNDER 45 CFR 46.10(b)(3):

Research involving the use of educational tests (cognitive, diagnostic,
aptitude, achievement), SURVEY procedures, interview procedures, or
observation of public behavior that is not exempt under paragraph (b)(2)
of this section, if: (i) the human subjects are elected or appointed
public officials or candidates for public office or (ii) Federal
statute(s) require(s) without exception that the confidentiality of the
personally identifiable information will be maintained throughout the
    research and thereafter.
