    Posted 01-15-2008 15:01

    Hello All:

I have been asked to organize and facilitate a seminar with the purpose of improving teaching effectiveness at my University.  Twelve faculty members-representing all ranks and a variety of disciplines across the university-will attend one two-hour session every other week, equaling eight sessions a semester.  Each session will focus on a set of readings intended to stimulate discussion.  Each participant will be expected to produce a summative project.

I'm seeking suggestions on readings as well as thoughts on the types of projects in which participants might be engaged.    I realize this is a management education discussion list and that this seminar is cross-disciplinary.  Perhaps though, some of you may have a similar seminar at your institutions or may have some resources you would be willing to share.  I'm open to all ideas.

Please respond directly to me at maranvilles@uhd.edu.  I'll be happy to share the results with anyone who is interested.

    Dear Steve,

I invite you to consider Teaching Management by yours truly and my colleague, and the stream of teaching related cases and vignettes available at the Darden School in the PHA (pedagogy and higher administration) case stream.  I'm attaching one or two of those for your personal review (not for duplicating).  There are a number of provocative technical notes in that series as well.  The series address all kinds of teaching related issues including teaching techniques, class room situations, situations after class, teaching lifestyles, etc.

I'm listing some web URLs for your convenience.   The book has chapters on most teaching approaches and techniques including lecturing, discussion, case method, experiential techniques etc.  I also teach a doctoral seminar on pedagogy (andragogy really) and am including that syllabus just for your reference.  Let me know if you want any further information that we might share.

Best wishes on your course.  It's an excellent endeavor and in my experience, very rewarding.

Suggest you take a quick look at Wankat, Phillip C.; Oreovicz, Frank S. Teaching engineering, McGraw-Hill Companies, 1993 , 0070681546, full text available at

No, you are not exactly intersted in engineers.  But I doubt you can show me how engineering students & business students differ in how they learn things. :)

For 11 years we've been teaching a course called "Research-based Creative Teaching Strategies".  It is based on my "Creative Training Techniques Handbook", which, with over 300,000 copies sold in 3 editions is the best-selling train-the-trainer book ever published.

Essentially it deals with CORE strategies -- the importance of closing, rather than ending so students tie things together, the importance of opening, rather than starting so that we break preoccupation, the importance of having students revisit  key content in a variety of ways so that information is moved from short-term to long term memory, and how to keep students engaged and energized.

It also deals with other things such as the importance of chunking content into 20 minute blocks and the importance of Control, Inclusion, and Openness in the classroom.  I've taught these principles at both Vanderbilt and SUNY-Utica.  There are a number of free articles posted on our website that may be useful.
