  • 1.  Question about student consulting services programs

Dear Colleagues: This coming semester I’ll be teaching an MBA Management Consulting course. A major experiential learning focus of this course will be the development of a business plan for an ongoing, year-round student business consulting service that would be independent of the MBA course, and which would provide relevant work/resume building opportunities for our MBAs (and undergrads as well who want to get involved). I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know of any similar student consulting service models you are aware of that are ongoing and independent of any particular course (although academic credit could be provided for the experiential learning involved, such as with internships). Thanks in advanced for your consideration!

Happy 2009 and upcoming Chinese New Year of the Ox!

    Charles,
Consider teaming your students with SCORE participants in your area. c.f.,

This would set up a Mentor environment while helping clients formulate their
    business and cope with problems.

    Dear Charles,

Many teams participating in the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) program (see www.sife.org) carry out just the sort of activity, on a year-round, 'going concern' basis, as you envisage. They are encouraged to engage in real world business development activities that assist/empower both existing businesses and start-ups in their community to improve economic outcomes. The program is open to both undergrads and higher degree students. They need to have a 'Faculty Advisor' (you!) and are encouraged to recruit a volunteer Business Advisory Board to act as quasi-Directors of their consulting company. This program is about as 'experiential' as it gets!

I won't stop right now to check whether Loyola Marymount has ever had contact with the SIFE program but I'm sure that others there in the US can and will assist you if you wish to explore the possibilities further.

    Kind regards,

    John Thornton
    CEO and Country Coordinator
    SIFE Australia
