    Dear Colleagues,

There have been dozens of short messages like the one below (just a random example, not to take it personally, please!) on the list. Like many others, I have followed this discussion, for a while, with much interest. However, I observed that over the past week it became mostly a series of brief exchanges between a _very_ small group of individuals. I rarely saw such exchanges on an academic list. Now I am just hitting the Delete button...too many times.

So much talk about values and self-regulation and reflection... I wonder, shouldn't we model these principles rather than just write about them? I would like to, respectfully, ask those members who have sent more than 10 messages over the past week to pause...breathe deeply...and ask themselves whether every one of the messages sent is really advancing the discussion further and whether they are doing good use of these communal space and time resources.

    Warm wishes,

    Jacob

Surely you jest. That statement is just silly. Read the newspapers Jack.

Thank you, Jacob. This discussion has sometimes deteriorated into
personal attacks that I find offensive and that do not contribute to a
useful discussion for me. I expect I am opening myself to attack now by
some of those who have engaged in such attacks. It feels more
comfortable to do it openly in this way than to offer my own ideas and
wait for them to be ridiculed. I have appreciated much of the
discussion, however. I will be chairing a symposium at the AOM meetings
this August that is co-sponsored by MED, CMS, and ONE on the topic of
the management professor's role in developing student awareness about
the current state of capitalism, so have found much good material from
this discussion. I hope some of you will be able to attend the session
and we can carry on a spirited discussion face-to-face then.
