    Colleagues,

Several folks have mentioned that my questions may be unclear.  Thank you for the responses.

Perhaps Question #1 could be reworded to read:

    1.  What do you (as a faculty member) expect an evaluation of faculty performance to accomplish?

This is what I am seeking.  What are YOUR expectations of any evaluation of faculty performance?

Your answer to Question #2 might drive the response to #1.  I hope this makes more sense. I was trying to make it easy on folks to respond, but sometimes brevity creates its own problems.

    Best regards,

    Pat

    Dear Patrick,

We've wrestled with this issue.  In my view, it's a good thing to have an annual faculty interview-I wonder how many schools actually DO that especially for tenured faculty.

I think the following elements ought to be in that discussion:

    1.       What did you do last year?

    2.       What are you working on this year?

    3.       How can we help you meet your goals?

    The faculty member might ask

    1.       What is the strategy of the school?

    2.       What core capabilities are you trying to build to deliver on that strategy?

    3.       How can I help you build those capabilities?

All of this should be developmental in my mind.  The "what did you do last year" may contribute to a merit increase, that's fine, but the tone should be upbeat, supportive, encouraging and the school should understand that it too has a responsibility to be clear about the future direction and how it is inviting faculty to contribute to a developing set of core capabilities that will help the school compete in the market.

    Regards,

       Jim

    Jim,

At Troy University we do exactly that. Each year faculty are evaluated formally by their department chair and submit a self-evaluation and a Professional Development Plan. Evaluations must be reviewed with the faculty and they sign off on the evaluation form. Non-tenured faculty are evaluated annually; tenured faculty are evaluated every 3 years. Adjunct faculty are also evaluated annually and after the first term that they teach for the university.

    From: Alev M. Efendioglu [mailto:alev@usfca.edu]

We also have a formal annual evaluation which includes "research", "teaching", and "service" and discusses the accomplishments of the previous year, objectives for the current year, and long term objectives. We use a form called ACP (Academic Career Prospectus), which is completed annually and submitted by late September. Hour long meetings are scheduled between the Dean and the faculty member to discuss the content of the document and sign off on it. This is done for all tenured and tenure-track faculty.

If anyone is interested, if you contact me directly, I will be more than happy to share the form with you. --- Alev

    Colleagues,

Thank you for your valuable contributions to the "faculty evaluation" thread.  I have not had a chance to thoroughly read and digest all of the posts yet, but will do so soon.  I am looking for fundamental issues that will form the foundation for this research.

It is my intent to study faculty performance evaluation from the ground up; starting with what it means to be a faculty member and to have your performance evaluated.  Another phase will include the managerial/administrative perspective(s), and yet another phase will consider the efficacy of various formats.

If you have additional comments, thoughts and/or feelings please don't hesitate to post to this thread or contact me personally.  Again, thank you for assisting in this research endeavor.
