I am working on a book chapter about sustainability and wanting to include some discussion of the "purpose of government." However, political and social science literature (where I assume such a discussion would exist) are not very well represented in my knowledge. Would anyone have some suggested reading - citations to guide me? Many thanks for any assistance you can give.

You might talk to the Alliance for Sustainability in Ashland, Wisconsin.
They're a nonprofit with personnel who stay up-to-date on literature. With
sustainability, it'd be most efficient if you focused on a scope of
sustainability, e.g., economic, community, water, land, etc.

How about being very clear on exactly what you are intending to sustain?
Many notions of sustainability simply amount to interference with Mother
Nature who uses discontinuation or death profusely.

For example, is it sustainability that you seek or continual, selective
    renewal?

Anyway, the purpose of government (of human behavior) is well stated in the
    U. S. Constitution.

    cheers,

    Carolyn,

"The Good Society," by Bellah et al., has an excellent perspective on what government is and should be--and it is a very popular book with sociologists and public administrators.

    Hi Carolyn,

I think the following references may be great resources for what you are
    looking for:

    Weimer, D. L. & Vining, A. R. 2004. Policy analysis: Concepts and
practice. 4th edn. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.
    Bemelmans-Videc, M.-L., Rist, R. C., & Vedung, E. 1998. Carrots, Sticks
& Sermons. Policy Instruments and Their Evaluation. New Brunswick:
    Transaction Publishers.

I have used both resources in a paper on the "role of the government"
vis a vis CSR, which may be of interest to you as well

    Lepoutre, J., Dentchev, N. A., & Heene, A. 2007. Dealing with
uncertainties when governing CSR policies. Journal of Business Ethics,
    73(4): 391-408.

    Hope this helps,

    Jan
